not necessarily a helpful bit of info given the timeline I'm working with, but perhaps a cheering one: the novel I'm writing ticks a lot of these boxes
urban fantasy
intensely platonic relationship at the forefront (abaolutely zero romance, just intense queerplatonic love)
worldbuilding that I'm putting a lot of love into (and which is, by all accounts, very cool)
mature (not sexual, just... mature) tone (haven't decided yet about swearing but there are already plenty of very chill references to things like sex and sex work, and the more mundane problems the characters face are adult problems)
one textually and one subtextually queer protagonist
unnamed but explicit & deliberate autistic & ADHD characters
so, like... you're not alone in wanting this stuff, and the number of other writers making it happen is not zero, even if my book specifically happens not to be done yet
(also in the meantime go check out some stuff by @nicolekornherstace bc a lot of it may be marketed as YA but it's not really)
Need more fantasy books aimed at adults and teenagers. Like, I feel like when you hit a certain age 90% of books aimed at you are romance. And my arospec brain isn't happy about this. Let me have more fantasy books, and yes I can read children's books, but because they're aimed at children they're always lower quality and seem to have way worse world + character building. Also the characters can't do things like swear or make adult jokes, which yeah aren't needed but would be nice and make the characters more relatable. And I am an author so I can do stuff about this but I still want other books too.
Also more representation in fantasy please. Want a LGBTQ+/poc/disabled/other minority character who's story isn't entirely centred around that alone.
